Protect Your Home for a Stress Free Vacation

By Sara

Thanks to Taylor Flannigan for writing this guest blog post.

There are lots of things you can do to protect your home when you take that longed for summer vacation. Some of them seem easy, but in the heady rush of packing to leave home, security is sometimes the last thing on our minds.

The first step in protecting your home against a burglar is to make your home look as if someone is home. If you switch all the lights off that is a sure sign that no one is home, conversely, if you leave all your lights switched on, that is also a sign that no one is home.

The best method for making your home look lived in and occupied is to get a timer. Set the timer to switch on a light or two in the early evening hours, and then set it to switch the lights off at the same time you would normally go to bed. That way, any burglar will assume that someone is home because it looks as if someone is inside turning lights on and off.

The next step to protecting your home while you are on vacation is to make sure that you cancel newspapers and mail. An overstuffed mail box is a sure sign that no one is home to collect the mail. Another big tip off are newspapers lying untouched in the driveway. Finally, and most important of all, switch on your home security alarm before leaving home.
